Have social networking site such as Myspace and Facebook rendered the high school class reunion obsolete?

I've been out of high school for ten years now, and my reunion is coming up next month. However, with the advent of Facebook and Myspace, I keep in contact with the people I want to keep in contact with (and the few who are not on either site I see on a monthly basis anyway). With that premise in mind, with social networking sites all the rage, are high school class reunions obsolete?

I think they are helping to make reunions obsolete. Besides, on these networking sites you can describe yourself any way you want. If you were the fat girl who always wanted to be the pretty, popular girl you can post some photoshopped pics of yourself. You can say that you are a successful lawyer, doctor, banker, businessperson, the list goes on. You can show a picture of yourself with some random hot girl and say that's your wife and put up pictures of your nieces and nephews and say they're your beautiful children. In other words, these sites offer the ability to bluff and raise the stakes of seeing one another in person. So yes, I think they are helping to make reunions obsolete.

I also think that people don't tend to come back home to where they went to high school anymore. People don't lay down roots anymore and switch jobs more frequently. I'm not buying a plane ticket to go to my high school reunion being held at the Elks lodge.

What are the social networking sites that you are registered with?Any sites specific to your country/language?

We all know Facebook and MySpace but there are many other social sites popular among French speakers or in certain parts of the world… Which ones do you use? Do you use them for dating, career networking, photo sharing?

I am with Perthyn a welsh socializing site which is quite new,

www.perthyn.com

I am planning to start a social networking site for college students to exchange stuffs, Will it work?

I am planning to start a social networking site for college students to date, chat, sent free SMS , call, play online games and create virtual tours of college to show where you met your love, your college etc. and also create virtual tournaments.
Privacy to messages, groups and friends will be given.

Exchanging pictures, videos and music through mobile at a go will also be available.

Well as far as it being a competitive market… That is true… Most of the things you listed are already available on other social sites. You need a niche. Something that you can market. For example I just started a new social writing community at http://www.freedomspress.com
I quickly realized that this was a tough market especially since the new age of blogging. So what can I offer people that other sites can’t? Well not much to be honest… But I can reinvent an idea. The idea of offering a service to people without a whole lot of computer knowledge. I stripped down the service to make it easy and dummy proof. You need to do the same. But keep in mind that the tough part is getting members. Why should people join when there are no members? Would you join a site when you are one of only 5 members? A way around this might to plan in stages… Don’t start off as Disney Land when you have only 5 park guests. instead start as a local small town fair. What I’m trying to say is if you have a never ending site with tons of options and pages then it might make the user feel as if they are alone on an island.

What type of social networking site would you start if you had unlimited funds?

MySpace, YouTube, FaceBook, Flickr, etc… It’s all been done… or has it? What type of social (or anti-social) networking site would you start up if money were no issue?

Mutual masturbation fetish site.

How can we get the huge number of social bookmarking and social networking websites?

Actually I searched in the web for the social bookmarking websites. Most of the sites are searched and submitted my website. But if I want the more number of social bookmarking and social networking websites how can I get?Could anyone tell me?

If I'm understanding the question correctly, you are asking how you can put a social bookmarking button on your website that will allow people to bookmark that page.

The easiest way is to go to http://www.addthis.com/ and get a free button that you can put on your website.

When people click on this button, they will see a page like this:
http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php

It will let the user choose which service they want to use to bookmark it, so you only have to worry about the one button!

I have one on my blog, at the end of every post. You can click on it to see what it does.

Good luck!

Documentary (Social Networking Online 1)

This was a huge project for my Documentary Media class. It wasn’t requred, but I wanted to show myself that I had filmmaking skillz. I chose to focus on the current trend of online social networking. I included many people, some that I never met before, but it all turned out to be great. A few glitches here and there, but I got an A. A hearty thank you to those who participated. I also wrote a blog: The documentary is finally up, and many apologies for leaving you hanging on. (The people that were in it were those that wanted to see themselves) Doing this project was fun, and a lot of hard work. Probably the toughest part was renting the cameras twice a week and having John (Mass Comm engineer) putting up with me coming in and out of his office. So what’s the documentary about? I wanted to focus on the current trend of online social networking. This was for a class (Documentary Media), and I ended up getting an A in it, partly because of this project. After Dr. Murphy okayed my topic, I went ahead and made a list of what I was going to cover in this film. This was only going to be 13 minutes, which was the limit. I knew it would be tough to cram it all into one, but I think that I did it. Choosing the people to interview was easy. I immediately drew up some names, such as my friend Liz from the radio station (she likes Myspace for the bands), my friend/co-worker Marc (who likes to meet people through groups), and one of my past professors Dr. Tom Foster, who was one of the very few faculty members that used Facebook. Just about everyone agreed to be interviewed, except for Mike Turk, for the obvious reasons. Everyone that I interviewed on-camera provided great nuggets of information, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to include all the great quotes. I realized that this was always a director and producer’s common tough situation, which is choosing the right stuff. I remember doing an interview with Dr. Foster, and it lasted 20 minutes, in which he provided some great details. However, again, I wasn’t able to include everything. Maybe I should make a deleted scenes version? Getting some of the b-roll was another fun part, as I logged in many miles of footage and in my car. I went from Greenville College to Alton to the loop to Larry Flynt’s place (which comes with a funny story, by the way). Sneaking the cameras into the mall was not too bad of a challenge, either. I would like to say many thanks to those who participated in this project. Your part means a lot, and there are those who I met while doing this. To my new acquaintances, like Bogart said at the end of Casablanca, “May this be the great start to a new friendship” Like what David Wark Griffith once said, “History by lightning”….. p.s.: Since I completed this project in April, it’s already showing a sign of outdatedness. During the near-three month period, Facebook added the feature where one can add as many ‘Applications’ as possible. In the film, I said that Facebook is ‘just plain text’ while comparing it to Myspace, which lets people use html and be creative. Thanks to those who took part in this (first part): George Beckett, Dr. Tom Foster of SIUE, Janelle Dobson, Chris Schrage

How to own and manage a Social Networking website?

I was wondering if there are any good books on owning and managing a social networking website. I have found it difficult to prepare for the challenges of managing a website. We recently hired a consulting/software development company that has taken care of everything from design and development to analyzing, testing, and hosting. However, I would like to know everything that they know! Is there anything I can study to learn the ins and outs of owning and operating a social networking website?
http://philip.greenspun.com/panda/community this is a decent guide to start with. (decent: not spectacular)

What does most current research say about effective training of people in social equity and diversity?

Do you mean training educators? “People” might be too broad a category for a usable answer.
